Makiman Sushi

4 06 2009

We recently cashed in our piggy bank change and had more than enough to get sushi takeout for dinner!  I crave sushi constantly but we only get it a few times a year because 1) we are picky about our sushi and 2) we never eat out.  We used to live a block away from one of the best sushi places in Center City Philadelphia but since we moved to the ‘burbs we’ve been wary of the local Makiman Sushi. We finally gave in and tried it.

Our order:

YOWZA! We really treated ourselves, eh?  Our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs.

The Shrimp Tempura Maki, Kampyo Maki, Tekka Maki, and “Blind Date” (tuna, cucumber, eel, and tobiko):

The Sweet Potato Roll and Hirame:

Matt had some agedashi tofu.  Ever since our grilled tofu night I know for sure I can’t eat it, so it was all for him and he was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

Matt is a purist so he gobbled up the kampyo and tekka while I noshed on the non-traditional selections.  I loved everything about the tempura and Blind Date except for the sauce–it was so sweet it made my teeth hurt.  The eel and tempura were soft but firm and the cucumber and batter gave each a nice crunch.

We both agreed that the rice was very well cooked and not too glutenous but there was too much of it in some of the maki, which made it somewhat dry.

The fish wasn’t melt-in-your-mouth premium grade but it was fresh, which is very important.

And we had this fabulous champagne that went perfectly with the sushi:

We liked Makiman.  It is possible to find good sushi in Northeast Philly!

Erin! My friend works at Maki Man! The sushi you ate might be made by him.

Well hopefully I can try more very soon! Have you been there?
