Market Day

1 08 2011

We had not heard of Canele until Matt met Nem Ngo at the Chestnut Hill growers market over the summer. She had samples of their signature item and he happily tried one…and was hooked. The delicious baked custard was creamy and rich, yet felt light like a sponge cake. Great for breakfast and excellent for dessert, we were surprised at just how well they went with coffee and red wine.

The center is gooey and soft but the dough on the outside gets baked to a caramely crisp.

Nem explained that Canele are a traditional item from the Bordeaux region of France. Matt has since noted a few places where you can get Canele around Philadelphia, but none really stand up to Market Day’s.

Canele come in two sizes: the smaller ones above can be popped into your mouth whole while the larger ones below take a bit longer to savor.

Market Day also makes tarts: savory and sweet. We tried a savory tart and the creaminess factor was through the roof. Matt even (gasp) said it was a bit too creamy for his liking, but I had no problem with the rich taste and texture. We’ll be sure to try a dessert tart very soon.

Market Day can be found at various famers markets around town and sometimes at the fair food stand at Reading Terminal market.
